This Asian Games Group E meeting is not a glamour fixture. It is a qualification fight.
Chinese Taipei sit on three points after a 2-1 win over Vietnam. Thailand sit on zero after an
8-0 loss to host Japan. The sides meet in Shizuoka on 17 September with a place in the top
two, and a path to the quarter-finals, on the line. Chinese Taipei’s opener was not pretty, but it
was useful. Su Yu-hsuan finished in the 16th minute. Minori Wakabayashi added a second in
the 81st. Vietnam pulled one back in the 85th, and Wang Yu-ting had to make a late save to
protect the result. That sequence tells you two things at once. Taipei can score against a
regional rival. They also fade late and still have to defend the last ten minutes with real
concentration. Thailand’s night was a different sport. Japan put eight past them. Coach
Natipong Sritong-In said afterwards that quality, reaction speed and physical condition were
the gaps, and that some players would be rested so the squad could target the next two
games. That is an honest admission. It also means Thailand will not arrive against Taipei in
the same shape they showed against Japan. They will try to shrink the pitch.
Official history between these two is not a Thailand procession. At the Hangzhou Asian
Games in 2023, Chinese Taipei won 1-0, even if the goal was an own goal. At the 2022 AFC
Women’s Asian Cup, Taipei won 3-0. Thailand have beaten Taipei in friendlies, including a
2-0 in 2023, but those matches do not carry the same weight as tournament games. When
the shirt is on and a group table is live, Taipei has found a way to keep Thailand quiet.
Form and the group table force different games. Japan 8-0 Thailand cannot be ignored,
but it also cannot be copied onto this match. Japan are the host and the standard in this
group. Thailand already know they will not win the group through Japan. Their remaining
path is Taipei and Vietnam. That changes the tactical brief. Natipong’s own comments point
to rotation and a tighter plan. Taipei, meanwhile, have three points in the bank. They do not
need a six-goal statement. They need another result before they face Japan on 21
September. So both sides have a reason to stay compact. Taipei will look to control the first
hour the way they did against Vietnam: early pressure, a clean chance for Su or
Wakabayashi, then manage the game. Thailand will try to avoid the open spaces that Japan
punished. An open 3-2 does not serve either bench. A 1-0 or 2-0 does. Taipei’s attack is real
enough to win a low-scoring match. Su Yu-hsuan has already shown she can finish from the
edge of the box. Wakabayashi gives them a different body in the area. Chen Ying-hui
organises the back line. That is enough to beat a Thailand side still absorbing an 8-0. It is
not automatically enough to produce four goals.
The tactical matchup favours a controlled Taipei win. Patrick De Wilde’s Taipei side are
not a high-press machine for 90 minutes. Against Vietnam they started on the front foot, then
dropped physically. That is the pattern to expect again. They will try to play through the
middle and attack the space behind Thailand’s full-backs. If the first goal comes, they can sit
on a lead and force Thailand to break a set block. Thailand’s problem is not desire. It is
speed of decision after a heavy loss. Japan exposed their last line repeatedly. Taipei will not
have Japan’s movement, but they will have enough quality to punish the same recovery runs
if Thailand jump out too early. The safer Thai plan is a mid block, five across when out of
possession, and set pieces. That plan can keep the score down. It rarely produces a flood of
goals. Cup and Games football at this level often dies in the second half when both teams
protect what they have. Taipei protecting a one-goal lead is more likely than a traded-goal
contest. Thailand protecting pride after 8-0 is more likely than a reckless chase from minute
one
